Why start a site so soon?

Stormblessed.com opened to the public on July 4, 2010.  As Brandon Sanderson said in a blog post 8 days later, “A fansite for a book that isn’t even out yet is a bit baffling to me.”  The Way of Kings was released internationally on August 31, 2010 and immediately burst onto the New York Times bestseller list (#7), the Amazon top 100 (for hardcover and Kindle), and #1 on Audible.

Usually, a fansite starting up before a book release would be pretty crazy and impractical.  But this time was different.

Video – Way of Kings Reading, JordanCon 2010

Because our site focuses on The Stormlight Archive series, Portalstones.com (the Wheel of Time site that has recorded JordanCon for the last 2 years) has allowed us to bring you video of Brandon Sanderson from JordanCon 2010 (Saturday, April 24).

Here, Mr. Sanderson reads part of Chapter 3 and Interlude 5 of The Way of Kings, and talks a little about literacy and gender roles, plus the “spren,” spirit-creatures that play an important part in the book.  Portalstones will have more video from JordanCon in the next few weeks, but for now, enjoy some of The Way of Kings in the author’s own voice (hit “more” to see the video players):
